uncertainty

the natural state of the world

Through my photographic journey, I’ve come to realize that I’ve been seeing it all wrong.

I’ve been trained to think that life is innately planned, managed, and organized.

I created artifacts of management, planning, and organization to no end to trick myself into thinking I am in control. There is no control in pretending uncertainty does not exist as an inherent condition of life and work.

This led me to realize that life must then really be inherently unmanageable, unplanned, and uncertain.

I needed to learn to deal with the inherent uncertainty more directly rather than pretend that it does not exist.

Doing so has helped me achieve more balance and presence in my life and work.

I want the same for you.

It’s OK to not know what it is or how to proceed.

Joe Callender

Hello! I'm Joe from New Jersey.

My imagery challenges the conventions, norms, and constraints we place on our belief systems and decision-making through a personal dedication to exploring liminality through the concept of the Beginner’s Mindset.

An expert mind sees few possibilities; the Beginner’s Mindset remains open to many possibilities.

My approach and imagery celebrates the role of liminality, not only as the primary means for creating contemplative or visually arresting art but also as a deeper lesson about the role of liminality for change and transformation.
